Emergency Medicine for all ACCS trainees


Welcome to the Emergency Medicine home page for ACCS.

During the two years of the generic ACCS programme you will normally spend six months in Emergency Medicine. During this time all trainees should attend the specific Emergency Medicine tutorials and education sessions locally, as required by your LETB. Some LETBs also run cross specialty ACCS training days for all ACCS trainees, which you should also attend when possible. There are also some LETBs which host a specific core training programme for each specialty group of trainees but access to these courses depends on the LETB to which you are appointed.  

All trainees beginning ACCS in 2015 should use the ACCS 2012 curriculum documents and relevant assessment requirements whilst undertaking the first 2 years of ACCS training. It is anticipated that there will be a new ACCS curriculum from 2018/19.

Emergency Medicine: Curriculum and assessment requirements for ACCS (2012)

ACCS training is described under the headings of 'common competencies' which are generic to all specialties, core 'major (CMPs) and core acute clinical presentations'(CAPs) and 'practical procedures' which cover the syllabus for Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine and ICM. During the Emergency and Acute Medicine modules of the ACCS programme trainees should cover a range of presentations and areas of the syllabus in order to gain competencies across all elements in the ACCS curriculum.

Common Competencies: These are competencies that should be acquired by all doctors during their training period starting within the undergraduate period and developed throughout postgraduate training. For ACCS trainees competence to at least level 2 descriptors will be expected prior to progression into further specialty training.  The levels of competence should be formally assessed before the ARCP by the trainees Educational Supervisor.

During the Emergency Medicine module some of the required assessments are summative which must be assessed by a consultant and which must be passed by the trainee whilst others are formative (educational assessments which allow the trainee to demonstrate how their competences have developed) - this will be indicated below. The RCEM has produced a list of domain descriptors for the summative assessments to give guidance to trainees and assessors.  EM assessments and descriptors are available in Appendix 2 of the RCEM curriculum, which can be found here

  • Descriptors for summative EM assessments.
  • Any 2 Major presentations: summative assessments undertaken by a consultant (either summative mini-CEX or CbD) from the following list: CMP 1-6.
  • CMP1 Anaphylaxis
  • CMP2 Cardio-respiratory arrest (or current ALS certification)
  • CMP3 Major Trauma
  • CMP4 Septic patient
  • CMP5 Shocked patient
  • CMP6 Unconscious patient
  • 5 Specified Acute presentations: Summative assessments undertaken by a consultant (either summative mini-CEX or CbD).
  • CAP1 Abdominal Pain
  • CAP6 Breathlessness
  • CAP7 Chest Pain
  • CAP18 Head Injury
  • CAP30 Mental Health
  • 5 formative assessments using WBA tools (mini-CEX, CbD or ACAT (EM) covering 5 different acute presentations from across the ACCS curriculum.
  • A further 10 acute presentations from across the ACCS curriculum which can be covered in a variety of ways e.g. using ACATs, e-learning, reflective practice entries, teaching and audit.
  • 5 specified practical procedures assessed by DOPS covering.
  • Airway Maintenance
  • Primary Survey in trauma
  • Wound Care
  • Fracture/Joint manipulation
  • Any 1 other procedure from the ACCS curriculum


For EM trainees an e-portfolio needs to be obtained through the RCEM website at the start of ACCS training as trainees register and enrol with the College.  All training information, courses, certificates ARCPs etc. must then be uploaded to the e-portfolio throughout training.

For non-EM ACCS trainees some paper based records can be downloaded from the RCEM e-portfolio as required but each College has its’ own portfolio requirements.
