ACCS Anaesthetics Trainees
All ACCS Anaesthetic trainees should register with the RCoA as soon as they obtain a training post which can be done below.
On completion of the 2 years of ACCS training, trainees will join Anaesthetics training to complete years 3 and 4 of the programme. Trainees are not eligible for appointment to HST (ST4) Anaesthetics until they have completed Stage 1 of the 2021 Anaesthetics Curriculum, i.e. have attained all the learning outcomes and passed the primary FRCA exams. ACCS trainees must undertake a minimum of 30 months training in Anaesthetics by the end of their completed ACCS 4-year programme.
While ACCS anaesthetic trainees are completing their ACCS training, much of the experience they gain, and evidence they collect during all 4 ACCS placements will be relevant to Stage 1 training on the Anaesthetics Curriculum. We would therefore encourage these trainees to consider whether evidence they complete on the ACCS Curriculum can also be linked to Anaesthetic Stage 1 training on the Lifelong Learning platform (LLP).
By linking evidence throughout ACCS training, ACCS anaesthetics trainee will have a considerable amount of Anaesthetics Stage 1 training already populated on LLP by the time they progress from ACCS to the final 2 years of Anaesthetics Stage 1 training. The following table provides guidance for the mapping of ACCS Learning Outcomes to relevant Anaesthetics Stage 1 Domains of Learning.
Examinations
Trainees moving from ACCS training do not need to have passed the FRCA Primary MCQ before entering CT3 anaesthesia but are required to have passed the Primary MCQ before applying for ST4 Anaesthesia. The entire FRCA Primary examination (MCQ's, SOE & OSCE) is required by the date of interview for ST4 Anaesthetics training posts. The ST4 Person Specification can be found on the Anaesthetics National Recruitment Office website.
